Consider Yoshi's introduction early in the film. The brothers stumble upon him in a cave, and without any meaningful interaction, he instantly joins their quest. There's a brief, mildly amusing segment where Yoshi causes chaos in the real world, but it's over before it begins. The dinosaur exists purely to move the plot along, devoid of personality or motivation (though credit to Donald Glover's surprisingly versatile voice work for injecting some life into this hollow shell).
